The Department welcomed in the new 400-level students on Monday morning with a mihi whakatau, where staff performed a waiata. The students performed their own waiata followed by karakia and hariru. The morning was completed with some kai and a mixer for staff and students.
Congratulations to Senior Teaching Fellow Judith Bateup who has been awarded the New Zealand Association of Scientists' Cranwell Medal, recognising two decades of promoting science careers to secondary school students.
The University of Otago is celebrating its most successful Marsden funding round ever, with four grants worth a total of $1.86m awarded to Department of Microbiology and Immunology researchers.
A research paper published in PNAS by Dr Mihnea Bostina and colleagues uses electron microscopy to demonstrate how an anti-cancer virus interacts with tumour cells, increasing the potential for clinical use of the virus.
Associate Professor Peter Fineran has been announced as the recipient of the UK Microbiology Society's Fleming Prize for 2019, based on nominations received by other members.
Congratulations to 300-level Teaching Fellow Dr Jen Robson, who has been named by students as one of the University's best tutors.
