Dr Judith Bateup awarded Cranwell Medal for excellence in science communication

Posted by on 26 November 2018 | Comments

Congratulations to Senior Teaching Fellow Judith Bateup who has been awarded the New Zealand Association of Scientists' Cranwell Medal, recognising two decades of promoting science careers to secondary school students.

Dr Bateup, alongside her role as 200 level coordinator, has developed an outreach programme for high school students, opening up the world of microbiology to many who would not otherwise have the opportunity to explore it as a part of their school curriculum. As well as hosting school groups in the department's undergraduate labs outside of the university teaching schedule, she organises visits to schools and provides resources to assist with teaching at secondary level. She is also the convenor of Hands-On at Otago and is involved with a range of other activities that promote science as a career to students and young people.
