Exploring the interplay between bacteria and MGEs
Mobile genetic elements (MGEs), such as phages and plasmids, are key facilitators of horizontal gene transfer within bacterial communities. However, their self-replicative interests can detrimentally affect the fitness of their hosts. While bacteria have developed a variety of immune systems to protect against MGE invasion, MGEs evolve strategies to counter or escape host defenses. In my presentation, I will discuss our efforts in the exploration of the ongoing battles between MGEs and their bacterial hosts.
