Synthetic Cannabinoids - what we know – what we need to know
Synthetic cannabinoids are one of the most rapidly growing class of novel psychoactive substance in New Zealand and internationally. Here in New Zealand problematic use peaked in 2017/2018 where a large number of deaths were associated with the use of AMB-FUBINACA. Our work over the past few years has focused on understanding the molecular pharmacology of this compound, and the new and emerging compounds that have replaced them. This talk will provide an overview of the legal/policy environment in which these novel substances emerged, and the approaches we are using to understanding their harm profile.
