Breast Milk and Gut Microbes. Humans are unique among mammals in producing milk that contains significant concentrations of small sugars which don’t feed the baby but instead nourish the microbes in the baby’s intestines. As part of the Our Changing World radio programme, Veronika Meduna meets University of Otago microbiologist Gerald Tannock and Callaghan Innovation chemist Ian Sims, who’ve joined forces to produce formula that matches this characteristic of human milk.
