“Microorganisms are found everywhere, and they are critical for life on earth.”

Danni Chen

As a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences student, Danni Chen loved the practical component of her course work. This encouraged her to go on and take another very practical degree – dentistry. Since medicine is based around the action of microbes, she says it was a natural transition.

“Microorganisms are found everywhere, and are critical for life on earth. Not only is a degree in microbiology, immunology and virology fascinating, it’s also a very useful degree, no matter what you choose to do next.”

Danni has been passionate about biological sciences her whole life, and the opportunity to interact directly with patients is what led her to study to become a dentist. As well as being a great starting point, she says her degree taught her skills that will be very valuable in a clinical environment.

“The Department of Microbiology and Immunology encourages self-guided learning. They not only teach students how to look for the answers themselves, but also to critically analyse the information they are presented with.”

Danni says she was able to find her own unique way of learning, which has also helped motivate her in further studies.

“The programme gave me the confidence to tackle a completely new course. Talking to lecturers and postgraduate students made me realize the importance of being truly passionate about the career I’ve chosen.”

Now she is working on finishing her second degree so she can get out into the world and start practicing as a dentist.

“Any field of science requires lifelong learning, so another 4 years is worth it if you're studying something that fascinates you.”
