University of Otago

Information for prospective postgraduate students

Postgraduate students play an important role in our departmental culture and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology has a very active postgraduate research programme. At any given time we have approximately 35 PhD students and 10 MSc students working in the department.

If you are interested in postgraduate study then we offer a number of research projects each year that are suitable for PhD and MSc studies.

If you are interested in undertaking postgraduate study in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology contact the leader of research laboratories you are interested in, our Head of Department Professor Vernon Ward (hod.microbiology@otago.ac.nz) or our Postgraduate Student Coordinator Professor Andy Mercer (andy.mercer@otago.ac.nz). More details on current MSc projects and supervisors can be found here.

A number of scholarships are available for postgraduate study and the University of Otago offers Postgraduate Awards for MSc students (both students undertaking a MSc by thesis-only and 2nd year MSc students) and PhD Scholarships for PhD students. Further information on the University of Otago scholarships and other scholarships can be found here »

We also offer PhD students the opportunity to present their research at one overseas conference during the later stages of their study and will offer financial support to help you achieve this.
