All hands on deck: transdisciplinary approaches for tackling tuberculosis
Tuberculosis (TB) is a curable disease and yet paradoxically it claims 5000 lives daily. Of growing concern is multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR-TB) being the leading cause of deaths related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Myanmar is one of 10 countries with a high burden of TB, TB and HIV, and MDR-TB listed by the World Health Organization (WHO). In this talk, I will discuss how cutting-edge technologies such as whole genome sequencing (WGS) were employed to guide three nationwide TB studies in Myanmar, namely the 1st National TB Patient Cost Survey, the 4th National TB Prevalence Survey, and the 4th National Anti-TB Drug Resistance Survey. I will also discuss how findings from these transdisciplinary studies informed the Myanmar National Strategic Plan for TB and how Myanmar achieved the 2020 deadline for the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target of reducing the TB burden
