Associate Professor Dawn Coates

‘Developing novel antimicrobial bone graft materials’

Based at the Faculty of Dentistry at Otago University for the last 15 years Dr Coates runs projects primarily examining angiogenesis, osteogenesis and stem cells. She leads the DEnTRegen (Dental Engineering and Tissue Regeneration) program with a focus on innovative research to produce antimicrobial constructs for bone grafting.  Dr Coates also has current stem cell research examining dental pulp, adipose-derived, and periosteal-derived stem cells.  She has over 70 peer-reviewed publications, 3 patents, and has supervised to completion 24 doctoral students.  Today she will overview some of the team’s research into nano-silver bone and hydrogel constructs as well as the use of manuka oil as an antimicrobial, with a focus on oral bone grafting applications
